Demons pt 4
The nature of the beast is thus that every so often it must be fed.
And the demons have been with me for more than half a century. Taunting, laughing stumbling through my world, work demons, social demons, sexual demons all demanding my attention and they sit here watching me type; they know the truth, they know. The future demons, fuzzy little creatures, make a nice pet if they could be tamed.
“And what are you doing tonight?” the demon asks.
“Trying to write.” I answer. The demon laughs/ a cold brittle sound.
“Miss the booze?” the demon asks
“I could use a drink.” I confess. The demon opens a small bottle and takes a long pull.
‘There’s plenty more if you want.” the demon says mockingly. I remember the pain of my failing liver and decline the offer. “Suit yourself.” the demon says as he takes another drink and staggers around. I watch him as he crashes heavily to the floor. “Hip-cup,” The demon says as he belches and slowly gets to his feet. Then he stands hand on hips just staring up at me. “We had some damn fine times, remember not being able to walk home and they found you curled up on Holly’s staircase.”
“That was a long time ago.” I answer.
The demon takes one more drink and says: “It’s who you are, who you’ll always be!” I sigh, finish this poem and head off to bed, the demon following closely behind me.
